Una ópera egipcia (An Egyptian Opera) is the title of the eighth album by the Granada-based band Los Planetas.
The album reached number 2 on the best-selling album charts in its first week of release, the highest position achieved by a Los Planetas album.
According to the promotional note, the title Una ópera egipcia is an expression used by gypsies to refer to "masterpieces that exhaust superlatives, those whose origin seems supernatural. J (the band's leader) heard it used in reference to La Niña de los Peines, but the expression is almost 140 years old and was coined after Verdi was commissioned to create an opera for the inauguration of the Suez Canal."
The album was presented by guitarist Florent Muñoz and drummer Eric Jiménez at Madrid's La Vía Láctea venue on February 4, 2010.
In the lists of best albums of 2010, it reached second place for the editors of Rockdelux magazine, third for those of Rolling Stone, and tenth for those of Mondosonoro.
The album received the award for best national alternative rock album of 2010 at the Music Awards organized by the Academy of Arts and Sciences of Music.
It was voted the seventh best national album of the 2010-2019 decade by the critics of Rockdelux magazine in its 388th issue, "35th Anniversary Special: Summary of the 2010-2019 Decade."
The album features the participation of La Bien Querida on the songs “No sé cómo te atreves” and “La veleta,” Antonio Arias (vocalist of Lagartija Nick) on bass in “Siete faroles,” and Enrique Morente on vocals in La Pastora Divina.
