As in previous years, the Vienna Philharmonic's 2024 New Year's Concert will be published by Sony Classical in both audio and video formats. Under the baton of Christian Thielemann, no less than nine works from the world of waltz and polka are presented for the first time on the program of what remains the most popular event in the world of classical music.

There are few concerts in the world that are as eagerly awaited as the Vienna New Year's Concert. This year it was broadcast in more than 90 countries around the world, reaching an audience of more than 50 million people.

The conductor of the 2024 New Year's Concert is Christian Thielemann, chief conductor of the Staatskapelle Dresden and successor to Daniel Barenboim at the Berlin State Opera. Thielemann has maintained close musical ties with the Vienna Philharmonic since 2000, conducted a New Year's Concert for the first time in 2019, and regularly appears with the orchestra in its subscription concerts at the Vienna Musikverein, at the Vienna Festival. Salzburg and on tours in Japan, China, Europe and the United States. Following their landmark recording of Beethoven's complete symphonies, the Vienna Philharmonic and Christian Thielemann began work during the pandemic on a complete recording of Anton Bruckner's symphonies, which will be released in a box set in 2023 to commemorate the bicentenary of the birth by the composer in 2024. For the first time, the composer's 11 symphonies are included. (Bruckner is also honored at the 2024 New Year's Concert with the first performance at this event of his Quadrille op. 212.)

Daniel Froschauer, chairman of the board of directors of the Vienna Philharmonic, highlights the important role of the conductor in the orchestra: "For many years we have enjoyed a close artistic collaboration with Christian Thielemann, especially in the field of the symphony. After holding positions at the Deutsche Oper in Berlin, in Gelsenkirchen, Karlsruhe, Hannover and Düsseldorf, Christian Thielemann was appointed general music director of Nuremberg in 1988. In 1997 he returned to his native Berlin as general music director of the Deutsche Oper. Between 2004 and 2011 he held a similar position at the Munich Philharmonic. Since the beginning of the 2012/13 season, Christian Thielemann has been chief conductor of the Staatskapelle Dresden. From 2013 to 2022 he was artistic director of the Salzburg Easter Festival and in September 2023 he was appointed successor to Daniel Barenboim as general music director of the Berlin State Opera, a position he will assume during the 2024/25 season. He debuted in Bayreuth in 2000 and during that time he has left his mark on the festival through numerous performances that have laid new foundations in its history. For many years he was also his artistic advisor and musical director. In addition, he has been invited to perform with the main orchestras of Europe, the United States, Israel and Asia.

Christian Thielemann is an honorary member of the Royal Academy of Music in London and visiting professor at the Carl Maria von Weber College of Music in Dresden. He is also an honorary doctor from the Franz Liszt University of Music in Weimar and from the Catholic University of Leuven. In 2003 he was awarded the German Order of Merit and in May 2015 he received the Richard Wagner Prize from the Richard Wagner Foundation in Leipzig, followed in October 2016 by an award from the Foundation for the Promotion of the State Opera. from Dresden. In April 2022 he was honored by the Salzburg Regional Government and in July 2022 he received the Gold Medal of the City of Salzburg. His recordings have garnered numerous awards.
