Influential British band Wolf Alice release their highly anticipated fourth studio album, The Clearing, along with lead track “Just Two Girls”. Available tomorrow, you can pre-order it now!
Following a potent trilogy of singles — “Bloom Baby Bloom”, “The Sofa”, and the most recent “White Horses” — each showcasing a distinct sonic direction, The Clearing arrives as a moment of crystallization for one of the UK’s most inventive and emotionally charged bands. Written in Seven Sisters and recorded in Los Angeles with Grammy-winning producer Greg Kurstin, The Clearing is a panoramic collection of bold, heartfelt songs and the band’s most refined work yet. It’s a classic pop/rock album that nods to the 70s but remains firmly rooted in the present. If Fleetwood Mac wrote an album today in North London, you would be close to this grand set of tracks, each as distinct as the last.
At its heart, The Clearing is a record about arrival — not at a destination, but at a sense of peace with the journey. Whether it’s the self-inquiry of “Thorns”, the yearning nostalgia of “Leaning Against The Wall”, or the raw intimacy of “Play It Out”, each song marks a point in the band’s evolution. A pivotal album in both concept and execution, The Clearing is less a reinvention than an acknowledgment of the band’s full capabilities: fierce yet fragile, playful yet profound. At the forefront is Rowsell’s ever-evolving poetic narrative, alongside the innate desire of Ellie, Joff, Theo, and Joel to have fun, confident in their ambition and ability at this unique moment in time.
From the expansive euphoria of “Bread Butter Tea Sugar” to the tranquil acceptance of “The Sofa”, the record captures a band unafraid to demand more from themselves than ever before. This is Wolf Alice fully in command: no longer searching, but striding confidently into a new chapter.
The album’s title functions as both a quiet mission statement and an emotional fulcrum. It finds the quartet reflecting on what remains when the uncertainty, insecurities, and self-criticism of their twenties dissipate. The sentiment — “Know who I am, that’s important to me. Do what I can to see the wood from the trees” (White Horses) — is less a declaration of triumph than of peaceful acceptance. The Clearing is Wolf Alice’s most accomplished and poignant work to date.
Wolf Alice have come a long way since the North London quartet emerged in 2013 as a young band mirroring their own emerging generation. Today, with their fourth album The Clearing, they find themselves at the peak of their powers, having become a band of generational importance. While the melancholic euphoria of their debut My Love Is Cool — which included the Grammy-nominated track “Moaning Lisa Smile”— captured and soundtracked the youthful experience of taking their first musical steps, the follow-up Visions Of A Life (2018) solidified their ascent with a Mercury Prize, before the precious wound of Blue Weekend (2022), which took them to No. 1 in the UK and earned them a Brit Award for Best Group.
Following a summer of landmark performances at Primavera Sound, Radio 1’s Big Weekend, and Glastonbury, the band will celebrate The Clearing with a sold-out tour across North America, Europe, the UK, and Ireland this autumn, which will see them headlining some of the biggest venues of their career to date, including London’s O2 Arena.
