Miles Davis' acclaimed "Bootleg Series" had not yet released material from 1963 or 1964—a pivotal period in Miles' musical evolution and the beginnings of the Second Great Quintet—until now. The 1963 recordings feature George Coleman, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, and Tony Williams, while the 1964 recordings highlight the arrival of Wayne Shorter on tenor saxophone as the final member of the Second Great Quintet.
France was important to Miles both professionally and personally, quickly becoming his preferred territory for performances. He played in France more times than in any other country outside the United States and recorded there frequently. His history in the country dates back to 1949, when he performed at the International Jazz Festival at just 22 years old, and extended to July 1991, with a concert in Nice two months before his passing.
