Described by Nicky Wire as "our most detached album ever", the album came at a time when the band was reflecting on what they had become and what they could become. They were inspired by the music they liked when they were young: New Order with Low Life , Prefab Sprout with Steve McQueen , Thomas Dolby with The Flat Earth , early Simple Minds, and the kind of electronic pop that dominated the first half of the 1990s. 1980. Wire then said: "The main lyrical themes are death, loneliness and ghosts. Being haunted by history and being haunted by your own past."
They began working in Cardiff before heading to New York to work with legendary producer Tony Visconti. The next stop was Ireland, with Greg Haver, the producer who had worked on their previous two albums. The final touches were carried out by Tom Elmhirst (Bowie, Goldfrapp, Adele), the mixing engineer who gave the songs a shine that combined his retrospective looks with some futurism.
