ALBUM ON SALE SEPTEMBER 15 VIA SONY CLASSICAL
Great classic movie songs have always been tenor Jonas Kaufmann's passion, and his new album for Sony Classical The Sound of Movies celebrates him with nearly a century of unforgettable movie songs that have thrilled audiences around the world. The album will go on sale on September 15, 2023.
Recorded with spectacular sound, together with the National Symphony Orchestra and Choir of the Czech Republic, conducted by Jochen Rieder, Kaufmann also features the collaboration of the famous guitarist Miloš Karadaglić on three of the tracks.
"Immersing yourself in this world for a few hours and forgetting everything around you is incredibly fascinating - similar to theater or opera," Kaufmann says of classic film music. "I have traveled extensively over many years, often alone for weeks and months in foreign cities on the other side of the world. In addition to museums, it was cinema - that great opportunity to entertain yourself when you are alone - that captured my imagination."
Kaufmann fell in love with film music through the leading tenors of the Weimar era, Joseph Schmidt and Richard Tauber, as well as the sublime orchestrations of the great film composers of the Golden Age, such as Erich Korngold and Max Steiner. that were steeped in the heritage of Puccini and Strauss. For Kaufmann, The Sound of Movies presents the undeniable influence of opera on the most popular of art forms.
The Sound of Movies reflects Kaufmann's fascination with a collection of popular hits, in several languages, spanning from Weimar-era Germany (a song written to accompany the 1929 silent film Ich küsse Ihre Hand, Madame ) to "Bring Him Home" from the 2012 film of the worldwide hit musical Les Misérables.
The album includes Kaufmann's performances of “Nelle tue mani” (Now We Are Free) composed by Hans Zimmer for Gladiator; the Oscar® winner “Moon River” from Breakfast at Tiffany's; and Vangelis' epic title that gives its name to the film 1492: The Conquest of Paradise. Great musicals are also included, with memorable titles like "Maria" from Leonard Bernstein's West Side Story; the title track from Singin' in the Rain; and several numbers by the legendary creative duo Rodgers & Hammerstein, including "Edelweiss" (The Sound of Music) and "You'll Never Walk Alone" (Carousel).
From the Italian maestro Ennio Morricone, Kaufmann has chosen songs taken from the great melodies of the soundtracks of Cinema Paradiso, The Mission and Once Upon a Time in America.
One of the new features of the album is a special arrangement of a song based on the main theme of The Cider House Rules (with lyrics by Gene Scheer), created for the album by its composer Rachel Portman, the first woman to win an Oscar® for a film soundtrack.
The album also includes songs that have been immortalized through their use in films, such as "What a Wonderful World", heard on Good Morning, Vietnam; "Strangers in the Night" from Spies on Action; and Carlos Gardel's classic Argentine tango "Por una Cabeza", which stands out on the soundtracks of Esencia de mujer and Tango Bar.
Guitarist Miloš Karadaglić joins Kaufmann for intimate performances of “Moon River,” “Edelweiss,” and “She Was Beautiful,” based on “Cavatina” from Stanley Myers' score for the Oscar®-winning film The Huntsman. .
Additionally, Kaufmann recreates two hits by American star tenor Mario Lanza, with "The Loveliest Night of the Year" from El Gran Caruso and "Serenade" from the film version of The Student Prince.
The Sound of Movies will be released on vinyl, digital and vinyl formats on September 15.
