Her debut album, Songs In A Minor, is a pristine album where R'n'B reconnects with the tradition of soul and blues. "Girlfriend" opens the record with a very catchy uptempo rhythm, and with "Falling" and its hypnotic piano riff, one understands that they hold a small marvel in their hands. Although the shadow of Curtis Mayfield sometimes crosses (the very blaxploitation "Troubles"), Songs In A Minor avoids falling into the trap of retro-hippie neo-soul to sound completely modern and clear. Alicia Keys is, without a doubt, the greatest hope for soul since Lauryn Hill. Songs In A Minor is perhaps the best soul/R'n'B album of 2001, a classic not to be missed under any circumstances.
