William Steinberg reached the pinnacle of his career when he was appointed music director of the Boston Symphony in 1969, succeeding Erich Leinsdorf. No previous conductor had simultaneously led two of America's top ten orchestras. The condition he had set for taking on that position in Boston was that he could continue to work in Pittsburgh with the orchestra he had conducted since 1952.
