Wilco’s thirteenth studio album, Cousin, was recorded at the band’s legendary Chicago studio, The Loft, over the course of two years. All ten new tracks are written by frontman Jeff Tweedy, and the lineup remains: Nels Cline, Mikael Jorgensen, Glenn Kotche, John Stirratt, Pat Sansone, and, of course, Tweedy on lead vocals.

After a brief detour into their country-influenced roots on the album Cruel Country, Cousin marks Wilco’s return to their more familiar territory of progressive and experimental rock. Tweedy's unique songwriting voice is in full evidence, with lyrics that elaborate through a variety of themes – from the iconoclastic to the introspective.

The addition of Welsh singer-songwriter Cate Le Bon to the project as producer is a unique and novel element in the recording process—the first time an outsider has actively participated in a Wilco recording session in over ten years. Le Bon brought her unique musical perspective to the band's characteristic sound and provided them with an inspiring new challenge to expand their musical boundaries.
