Now, Debargue dedicates his new album entirely to Domenico Scarlatti.

He previously played four of this Italian master's sonatas on his acclaimed debut album. Germany's Der Spiegel praised him, saying: Debargue's Scarlatti reminds one of his powerful predecessors. He displays the subtle touch and feeling Vladimir Horowitz bestowed upon these miniatures and brings a new sound to Scarlatti's keyboard music. Debargue plays the outer limits of expression between desolation and ecstasy – one might find it overloaded, but it's no less thrilling for it. And then there's the gentle touch of Glenn Gould.

Debargue is enthusiastic about his new project: Scarlatti is inspiring. He is at the center of my musical thought concerning music for keyboard instruments. I took it as a kind of personal mission to finally do something with him.

Although Scarlatti generally doesn't have an established place in the repertoire – his work is not commonly heard and almost never takes a prominent place in a recital – he is one of those milestones that every pianist must master. He was born in Naples in 1685, the same year as Johann Sebastian Bach. But, unlike his versatile German colleague, he was first and foremost a harpsichordist, a man of subtle yet very precise nuances. The 555 harpsichord sonatas are the core of his compositional output.
